10 Jolly Good Reasons for Buying a Home in Lyde Green

Paul Hajek | 19 Aug 2016

It’s been a while.

We started with Chipping Sodbury, popped down the road to Yate, moseyed over to Frampton Cotterell, and now we’re shaking on down to…?

Each little vignette about why you might one day like to buy a house here or there.

As befits our jolly nature, we’ve retitled our series, and now we give you “10 Jolly Good Reasons For Buying A Home In…

Lyde Green”

1. Lyde (Danish for ‘Sounds’!)  Green is also known as Emersons Green East is a new housing development and an expansion of Emersons Green, which was built in the late 90’s.

2. Lyde Green comprises of 177 hectares of land – that’s 437 acres, or 240 Manchester United pitches!

Once the development is completed, it will hold approximately 2,500 homes.

The housing developers are Taylor Wimpey, Bellway, Barratt Homes, Persimmon, Linden and Charles Church.

3. 2 new primary schools will be built, and the first will be open September 2016 for Reception classes.

A crèche will also be built, situated next to the new community hall.

A new secondary school is also in the pipeline. Those currently nearby include Downend, Mangotsfield and The Ridings.

Other facilities include local shopping, health care, formal and informal open spaces and nature conservation areas.

4. Bristol and Bath Science Park (BBSP) is a new £300m development which first opened in 2011. The development is ongoing and it sits in the new Lyde Green development. Research-led companies can take advantage of its fantastic facilities, used to support science and technology businesses.

It also works in partnership with local universities, including University of Bath, University of Bristol and University of the West of England (UWE).

5. Lyde Green also lies on the Bristol to Bath cycle track, which is 13 miles long. It has proven to be a popular commuting route from Bristol to Bath, and vice versa.

Originally part of the former Midland Railway, it closed its doors to passengers in the 1960s, and was renovated as a railway path during the early 1980s.

6. Lyde Green lies alongside the M4, but is not currently linked to it. However, there are hopes for a new junction nearby which would link them.

Lyde Green is connected to the A4174 ring road, a dual-carriageway which links North West and South East Bristol.

7. A dedicated bus lane will be built from Bristol and Bath Science Park to the City Centre, known as the Metro Bus. The aim is to assure passengers a guaranteed set journey time – no delays, apparently!

In turn, the service forecasts 600,00 new passengers per year, with the hope that many people will ditch the car and hit the Metro Bus instead.

8. Emersons Green village is a quick 10-minute walk from Lyde Green’s village. Emersons Green  includes a play park, village hall, vets, doctors, dental surgery, and many shops.

Did you know? Coal was once mined from the area during the 19th century?

Downend is a short cycle ride from Lyde Green, and features small shops, cafes and pubs.

Other local villages include Westerleigh, Pucklechurch and Coalpit Heath.

9. Bristol’s city centre is 8 miles away, which can be accessed quickly via the new Metro Bus system, once built.

Bristol is known for its artistic vibe, especially in places such as Stokes Croft. There’s fantastic sights to be seen, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge and Banksy’s street art.

10. Chris Skidmore is Conservative MP for Kingswood constituency, which covers Lyde Green. Chris has held the position since 2010, and has campaigned for the new M4 link near Lyde Green.
